Sounds like another bad case of presentism where you become so sanctimonious in the present thinking that we could’ve been so much better at making decisions back then
I think it's mostly well-intentioned. They hear about the 1967 California abortion bill and the 1986 amnesty, but they don't know the rest of the story. And to be fair, where would they learn it?
Reagan was also the first and only president to write a book in opposition to abortion WHILE HE WAS IN OFFICE: "Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation."
“The argument, I think, endures or ignores one basic question that
has to be answered, and that is "is the unborn child a human being," and I happen to believe from all the study that I have been able to do, all the information I have been able to get, that when you interrupt a pregnancy you are taking a human life, and so it isn't a question of legislating someone's morality. It is a question of do we, in our reinterpretation of morality have
the right to take an innocent human life that can't defend itself.”
Well said Rod. I was on active duty in the Navy when Reagan was elected. He resurrected a deeply troubled military. And I appreciated the 17% pay raise that came in ‘81.

Certainly not in the public schools, as they stand today. Maybe that can be turned around with new leaders coming in. We'll see.

Indeed he was.
Ronald Reagan, 1980:
“The argument, I think, endures or ignores one basic question that
has to be answered, and that is "is the unborn child a human being," and I happen to believe from all the study that I have been able to do, all the information I have been able to get, that when you interrupt a pregnancy you are taking a human life, and so it isn't a question of legislating someone's morality.
